The Coyote Peak Trail is a single-track path offering expansive views of the forest canopy and surrounding canyons. As you hike, the trail gradually ascends and opens up near the peak, providing stunning vistas of Napa Valley and sweeping views over Ritchey Canyon. The trail traverses diverse landscapes, featuring majestic redwoods, chaparral, and riparian zones along a meandering stream. The vegetation follows a distinct pattern, with forests covering the north-facing slopes and canyons, while brushy terrain dominates the south-facing slopes.

For a rewarding 5-mile loop, start at the Redwood Trailhead. Follow the Redwood Trail for 0.5 miles until you reach the Coyote Peak Trail junction on your left. Continue on the Coyote Peak Trail all the way to the South Fork Trail, then proceed straight to the Spring Trail junction. To shorten your hike, turn left at the South Fork junction to reach the Spring Trail more quickly. Follow the Spring Trail down to the Ritchey Canyon Trail, then continue for 1 mile until you reach a creek crossing. Cross over to return to the Redwood Trail and head back down to the parking lot. This route offers a comprehensive experience of the park's varied environments and scenic beauty.

loops off of Ritchey Canyon Trail and travels around a local vineyard for a nice loop and is popular with trail runners. To reach the Vineyard Trail, park at the Redwood Trailhead Parking lot and hike up the Redwood trail for approximately 1.4 miles. You will see various plant communities along the trail, including Redwood trees and trillium flowers near Ritchey Creek. At the Ritchey Canyon Trail junction, cross the creek and take the Vineyard trail junction lined with manzanita trees and wildflowers, such as Warriors Plume and Henderson's Shooting Stars. Connect back to Ritchey Canyon Trail near the campground and hike over to the Hitchcock site. Alfred Hitchcock, his wife Martha and their daughter, Lillie Hitchcock Coit, entertained San Francisco society at Lonely and helped popularize the sunny valley as a summer getaway from the city. A renovation project is in the beginning planning stages to transform the building into a youth outdoor education center and event space.

The History Trail is a 1.2-mile hike leading to the Bale Grist Mill. It begins at the end of the Day-Use area in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park and connects to the Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park. Early in the hike, you'll encounter a pioneer cemetery, featuring a short 0.25-mile accessible path with interpretive panels detailing the site's history. Nearby is the site of Napa County's first church, built in 1853 and named after Reverend Asa White, who delivered sermons here.

The trail ascends steeply from the cemetery onto a ridge that parallels Highway 29. As you continue, the path gently winds down through dense forests, open clearings filled with chaparral shrubs, and a riparian corridor along Mill Creek. The trail concludes at the mill, after passing the remnants of the mill pond that historically brought water from Mill Creek to power the mill’s overshot waterwheel.

This short hike offers a glimpse into Napa Valley's pioneer history. Although not overly strenuous, it can still provide a good workout. If you plan to visit on a summer weekend, we recommend starting early in the morning from Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. This way, you can enjoy the first tour and demonstration of the mill before heading back. While afternoons in the summer can get quite hot, this trail is a great option year-round.

Ritchey Canyon Trail is 8 miles out-and-back that takes you through the park on historic routes. This trail connects with the Upper Ritchey Canyon Trail to take you to the farthest reached of the park.
